Sid Richardson Museum offers a free look at how artists imagined the West

A Western painting can tell a story before anyone reads its label. A figure's position, a patch of light or an unfinished-looking action suggests what might happen next. Sid Richardson Museum gives Fort Worth visitors a place to examine those storytelling choices at close range.

Richardson began collecting Frederic Remington and Charles Russell in 1942, and their work remains central to the museum's collection. His preference for action and suspense helped shape what he acquired. Consider how that preference influences the picture of the West a collection presents, and whose experiences require further historical reading beyond the frame.

The museum currently lists Russell's Retreat: Summers at Glacier National Park from May 2, 2026 through April 2027. Check its exhibition page and calendar for what is on view and for related tours or programs before planning a visit around a particular artwork.

Admission at 309 Main Street in Sundance Square is always free. Normal hours are 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Monday–Thursday and Saturday, 10 a.m.–8 p.m. Friday, and noon–5 p.m. Sunday, with holiday exceptions. The visit page explains parking validation at participating garages. Allow time to return to a painting after reading its context; the story you see may change.
